Cornish Sunset came about one evening during the summer of 1997 while sat in a park in Manchester.

Firstly the church bells began to chime as the bell ringers started their practice. This reminded me of my childhood and sitting outside in the evening. From our home we could hear the church bells from across the valley and the children playing. Also there was often a skylark flying and singing high above us.

The date on my original hand written score for the solo is 28th of July 1997. The original title of the Euphonium solo was “A Serenade To A Summer Evening.” I decided that this was too long and as a result shortened it to “Cornish sunset.”

Cornish Sunset was the start of my composing/arranging career. The score was sent to Goff Richards (Who I had known for many years). Goff wrote back to me saying how much that he had enjoyed it and encouraged me to keep writing.

This new revised edition of Cornish Sunset has a few subtle changes, a more detailed Drum Kit part, extra Glockenspiel also a few changes in the general accompaniment. For the soloist I have made a couple of changes and given some lower octave options.

Finally the recording below features the Euphonium players from the Bodmin Town Band, Camborne Town Band, Mount Charles Band and the St. Austell Town Band.

The bands are conducted by Goff Richards and the performance was recorded live at the Hall for Cornwall in Truro.
